Why a tablet?
The mother of all questions, the source of all doubts! While most conventional people blindly recommend a desktop, there are certain features of tablets that set them apart from the competition.
If you are planning to work on the equipment all day, typing lots of emails, staying connected, and most of all, staying in one place without travelling, the desktop may still be the preferred alternative. Of course, that was until, we saw a huge price slash in tablet prices and a host of manufacturers offering tablets below 6,000 rupees. The era of desktops is over.
Advantages of a Tablet
Tablets are cute, and they pack a punch. They are armed with a host of connectivity features, including 2G or 3G network connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. They are extremely portable, lightweight, and can be carried around with ease to wherever you wish to take them.
Tablets can do almost everything a desktop and laptop can do, some even better than them.
With sub 6,000-rupee tablets, there will not be much to offer on the hardware front, so no eye opening graphics or HD games over here. Neither can one expect a 12MP snapper or other multimedia perks. However, the connectivity features are never left out and that is the primary requirement in a business oriented investment.
A Tablet can act like an organizer, store and manage all your contacts, send and receive emails, some can also take calls. Ideally, it can replace almost all of your office, all you need there will have to be a table and a few chairs.
Disadvantages of a Tablet (and how to make up for them)
Perfection is a myth. No device is perfect. Anyone who has used a tablet, or anything touch based, will tell you instantly, typing long documents in a tablet is hard work. The solution is to get a wireless keyboard or a keyboard dock, and use Bluetooth, a standard in all tabs to connect seamlessly.
If you are troubled by the poor battery performance, a common problem in sub Rs.6,000 tablets, well, Google the topic and you will find hundreds of techniques to increase battery life. Most of them work.
With different manufacturers rooting for different operating systems, it is a major concern if documents from one platform will be editable and viewable in others. It was a valid concern a few years ago. But with modern cross platform versions of the same program and application, compatibility problems are a thing of the past.
If you are still thinking of reasons not to invest in a tab, you are losing money while waiting! It could be the best thing you ever did for your small business.
